Into Something Better – Apples, Switzerland August 2017

Summer is coming to an end.  We can already feel the cool of the mornings and evenings and the mood is just a bit more introspective, a bit less exuberant. Welcome to the August edition of the international blog circle celebrating mothers and children in nature.  The group was created to provide an escape from technology for our children and an opportunity for mothers who are photographers to use the technique of freelensing during these adventures. This month I took advantage of the earlier fading light and incorporated some long exposure work into my session.  I never thought that freelensing would serve as a jumping off point for the integration of other techniques, but I love the unique results.

As usual, we find ourselves in the woods close to home for a Sunday Daycamp (as we call it). This month’s images were taken at the St. Pierre refuge in Apples, Canton Vaud, Switzerland. Our typical routine includes walks and playtime, boredom that leads to inspiration and creativity, food cooked over the fire, relaxation and wine for the adults and s’mores as a finale.

On any given Sunday, you will find my husband and myself with our two little kids somewhere in nature.  Most often, we are in the forest.

Sleeping In The Forest
by Mary Oliver
I thought the earth remembered me,
She took me back so tenderly
Arranging her skirts
Her pockets full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before
A stone on the riverbed,
Nothing between me and the white fire of the stars,
But my thoughts.
And they floated light as moths
Among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
Breathing around me.
The insects and the birds
Who do their work in darkness.
All night I rose and fell,
As if water, grappling with luminous doom.
By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times
Into something better.
