2014 Award Winners

One of my photography goals in 2014 was to take some pretty big risks and submit my work to some photo competitions.  I started this process by choosing some curated and themed online submission groups to enter my work to. I am so pleased with the results.  I was given a very warm reception in this community and some of my favorite work was featured.  Here’s a gallery of my featured work this year. Thanks to all the curators and judges who chose to share and feature my images.  Your attention helps keep me going and growing and is appreciated more than you know!  Kate.

2014 Year End Reflection

2014 was a year of tremendous growth and exploration for my photography.  I took on a very intensive photography project this year hoping to learn new techniques, experiment freely, develop artistically and discover more about what photography wants from me.

This Project 52 required me to submit a photo a week to a Facebook group along a specific theme that changed each week.  My purpose was to shoot with the theme in mind and bring fresh images to the project.  I am very pleased to say that I met the deadline each week of the project beginning the third week of January, 2014.

I learned several very important lessons during this project year.  I learned some great new techniques and perspectives.  I learned to embrace the limitation of my gear by purposefully breaking rules and playing with distortion and blur.  I learned to trust my instincts and bring my sometimes wacky and humorous personality to my images. I also learned that what I was shooting personally was no longer in line with what I was shooting professionally.  This is a difficult place to be for me and I hope to come to a place of alignment and better understanding over the next year.

To this end, I’m drastically limiting the number of client sessions that I’m taking in 2015.  I’ve already made some commitments that I plan to fulfill and I will be creating some special shoots that help me develop into the photographer that I want to be. I don’t know what the end result will be, but I’m excited about the journey.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and encouraged me to keep shooting.  Knowing that my work is appreciated by others helps me keep going through the creative slumps and moments of not quite achieving my vision.  I will keep going and sharing with you along the way.
